How to Get the Best Wedding Photos: A Photographer’s POV
Jeremiah and Marilyn at the Wilder Mansion.
Great wedding photos don’t just happen. They’re the result of thoughtful planning, great light, a photographer you trust, and a little magic in between. Here are a few of the things we think about on your wedding day—and how you can help set the stage for the photos you’ll want to look at forever.
Golden Hour is the Real MVP
Golden hour (about an hour before sunset) is hands-down the best time for romantic, glowing portraits. If you can schedule your couple’s photos around that window, we’ll make the most of that soft, dreamy light.
First Look vs. Aisle Reveal
We love both options, but a first look gives us more flexibility for portraits and calms the nerves before the ceremony. It also frees up time later in the day so you can actually enjoy cocktail hour.
Location, Location, (Natural) Light
Whether you’re getting ready in a hotel suite or walking into your ceremony, consider how much natural light the space gets. We bring pro lighting gear, but soft window light will always be the most flattering.
The Big Picture
We’re always watching the timeline and adjusting based on light, weather, and mood. The more you let us in on your vision ahead of time, the better we can shape your day around what matters to you most.
A Note on Timing
We totally understand that not every timeline allows for a ton of flexibility. That said, if you can carve out a little space to step away and be present with each other—even just 15 extra minutes—it makes a world of difference. When couples trust us with a bit more time and creative freedom, the results always show. What you’ll remember isn’t the rush or the schedule—it’s the quiet, meaningful photos you took time to make.
These are the kinds of things your photographer should be thinking about for you—but a little heads-up goes a long way in making your photos shine. If you’re just starting your planning, I’ve created a free Wedding Photography Guide packed with tips like these and a sample timeline to help you feel more prepared.
