Planning a Chicago Wedding? Here’s What to Know About Photography

Chicago weddings are iconic—but they come with quirks. As photographers who live and work here, here’s what we think couples should know to make sure their photography runs smoothly.

It was 10° during these photos hence the frozen waterfall!

Plan for Travel Time (and Then Add More)
Getting from the vibrant West Loop to the picturesque Lincoln Park can take anywhere from a quick 15 minutes to a longer 45 minutes, depending on the day and traffic conditions. If you're bouncing between various locations during your wedding festivities, it’s wise to pad the timeline generously and ensure you have a well-thought-out plan B in place. This way, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Permit Talk
Some popular spots around the city, such as the scenic Art Institute gardens or the beautifully maintained Garfield Park Conservatory, require a special permit for photo sessions. We can assist you in navigating this process—just remember, do not assume that we can simply show up and start shooting anywhere without the appropriate permissions.

Seasonal Shifts
Chicago light transitions quickly and dramatically with the changing seasons throughout the year. A charming November ceremony scheduled for 5 PM? Expect it to be dark outside. Conversely, a vibrant July wedding held at noon? You'll be greeted with a blazing sun overhead. We are here to assist you in planning around these variations in light, but having awareness of these differences is incredibly important for a successful event.

Embrace the Wind, Trust the Forecast-ish
It’s the Midwest, after all. Weather here can be unpredictable; it might sprinkle one moment, gust with wind the next, or even heat up to a surprising 80° in the middle of October. We always ensure to bring backup gear to be prepared for any scenario, and we can pivot quickly when necessary, but having a flexible mindset truly helps us maintain the unique vibe of the moment — which ultimately results in incredible photos that capture the experience beautifully.

These are the kinds of things your photographer should be thinking about for you—but a little heads-up goes a long way in making your photos shine. If you’re just starting your planning, I’ve created a free Wedding Photography Guide packed with tips like these and a sample timeline to help you feel more prepared.
